When my daughter was about 5 years old and was in Kindergarten she began to use a computer there to keep track of and take tests on the books she would read. Yes, she was reading in Kindergarten. She had a great teacher that recognized it and placed her in the gifted and talented program at her school. Since she was already using the computer at school she wanted to learn more about how to use it at home as well.
In order to help her learn more about how to navigate through the programs we set up a computer that did not have hughes net satellite internet access because we were concerned about what she might access while browsing. Along with the regular programs like Microsoft Word we made sure that she had games that she could play. We pretty much turned her loose with her computer to allow her to apply what she was learning at school to what she was doing on her PC.
She continued to use her computer in this manner as she got older and even used it to do some of her homework and we added satellite internet after awhile so that she could do whatever research she needed for school. Even though we did teach her some of the initial computer uses at home much of her training has come from school.
Thanks to mommy blogger Karan Gomerack for the guest post.
